Google's Veo 2 Video Generator Now Available on Gemini Advanced
Google is making its advanced AI video generation model, Veo 2, accessible to users who subscribe to Gemini Advanced, its premium AI service. This move positions Google to compete directly with OpenAI's Sora and other emerging AI video generation platforms.
Key Features and Access:
- Gemini Advanced Integration: Gemini Advanced subscribers can now select Veo 2 from the model dropdown menu within Google's Gemini applications.
- Video Creation Capabilities: Users can generate eight-second video clips at a 720p resolution with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
- Sharing and Downloading: Generated videos can be shared directly to platforms like TikTok and YouTube via Gemini's share button, or downloaded as MP4 files.
- Watermarking: Videos created with Veo 2 will be watermarked using Google's SynthID technology to indicate they are AI-generated.
Limitations and Future Plans:
- Monthly Limits: There are monthly limits on the number of videos users can create.
- Unsupported Plans: Google Workspace business and education plans are not currently supported.
- Whisk Integration: Veo 2 is also being integrated with Whisk, an experimental Google Labs feature. Whisk allows users to use images as prompts to create new images, and a new feature, Whisk Animate, enables turning these generated images into eight-second Veo 2 videos.
- Future Development: Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has indicated plans to combine Gemini and Veo AI models to enhance Gemini's understanding of the physical world.
Industry Impact and Concerns:
- Competitive Landscape: The integration of Veo 2 into Gemini Advanced intensifies the competition in the AI video generation space, with companies like Runway also releasing advanced models and securing significant funding.
- Artist and Creator Concerns: The rise of video generators like Veo 2 raises concerns among artists and creators about potential disruption to creative industries. A study by the Animation Guild estimates that over 100,000 U.S. film, television, and animation jobs could be impacted by AI by 2026.
