Chinese Tech Giant Kuang-Chi Invests $300 Million in Israel to Drive Smart City Innovation
By Dennis Mitzner | May 9, 2016
Chinese technology conglomerate Kuang-Chi has launched a significant $300 million fund in Tel Aviv, Israel, aimed at tapping into the country's renowned expertise in smart city technologies. This strategic move positions Kuang-Chi as a key player in bridging Israeli innovation with the vast Chinese market, according to Ruopeng Liu, the company's founder.
Kuang-Chi's Vision and Strategy
Kuang-Chi, valued at over $10 billion, is actively seeking early-stage investments. The company sees Israel as a fertile ground for groundbreaking ideas, particularly in areas crucial for modern urban development. Liu stated, "Israeli entrepreneurs tend to have very big ideas, but there are limitations in the local market; we can help these companies to take big leaps." The company's strategy involves leveraging Israeli market capabilities alongside its own distribution, sales, marketing, and technology development resources in China.
Focus on Smart Cities and Key Investment Areas
The primary focus of the Kuang-Chi GCI Fund & Incubator in Israel is on developing solutions for "smart cities." This aligns with China's pressing needs, as its rapidly expanding urban populations face challenges such as environmental pollution and shortages of resources like potable water. Kuang-Chi aims to address these issues by investing in technologies that enhance environmental monitoring, safety, natural disaster preparedness, and disaster relief.
Liu emphasized the importance of environment and safety for future cities, noting, "We know the severity of the problem in China and desperately need technology to monitor and track the real data of environmental change." He also highlighted the economic impact of disasters, stating, "3.5% of Chinese GDP is lost because of disasters. Chinese cities are crowded and if something happens, many people will die."
Initial Investments and Portfolio
The fund has already made its first significant commitment: a $20 million investment in eyesight Technologies, an Israeli machine vision company. Kuang-Chi's existing investment portfolio includes companies like Solar Ship Inc., Martin Aircraft Company (ASX:MJP), biometrics pioneer Zwipe, and communications group HyalRoute, demonstrating a broad interest in disruptive technologies.
Beyond smart cities, Kuang-Chi is actively exploring investment opportunities in robotics, aviation, and technologies that enable machines to understand human behavior, including virtual reality.
The Growing Trend of Chinese Investment in Israel
Kuang-Chi's initiative is indicative of a larger trend of increasing Chinese investment in Israel's technology sector. Chinese investment in the country is reportedly growing by 50 percent annually. This influx of capital is helping Israeli startups scale their ideas and reach a global audience, with China often serving as the first major market.
Despite historical perceptions of China as a "copycat nation," the country's economy is rapidly evolving, driven by increased exposure to international tech startups and substantial investment in domestic research and development.
Government Support and Investment Philosophy
Kuang-Chi operates with the support of the Chinese government, which is keen to see its cities improve their resilience against natural disasters and overcrowding. Liu clarified the firm's investment philosophy: "We are not financial investors. We don't care about the stage, we only care about what they are doing. It could be a one person company or a 100 person company."
