Anthropic Launches Economic Futures Program to Address AI's Impact on Labor and Economy
As warnings mount about Artificial Intelligence's potential to displace millions of jobs, AI company Anthropic has launched its Economic Futures Program. This new initiative aims to support research and policy development focused on AI's economic impacts, particularly on the labor market and global economy.
The AI Job Displacement Dilemma
Silicon Valley has been abuzz with discussions about AI's promise to create new career paths and economic opportunities. Analysts and banks have highlighted AI's potential to boost GDP. However, these gains are not expected to be distributed equally, with many anticipating widespread AI-related job losses. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has notably predicted that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs and spike unemployment rates to as high as 20% within the next one to five years.
Anthropic's Economic Futures Program: Goals and Initiatives
Launched on Friday, the Economic Futures Program seeks to provide a more evidence-based understanding of AI's economic consequences. Sarah Heck, head of policy programs and partnerships at Anthropic, emphasized the importance of grounding these conversations in data rather than predetermined outcomes. The program will focus on three key areas:
- Research Grants: Providing grants of up to $50,000 for empirical research on AI's economic impacts and evidence-based policy proposals.
- Policy Development Forums: Creating forums to develop and evaluate policy proposals, with symposia planned in Washington, D.C., and Europe.
- Dataset Building: Building datasets to track AI's economic usage and impact over time.
Heck stated that the program's primary goal is to understand what is actually happening with AI's economic effects. If job losses occur, the program aims to convene thinkers to discuss mitigation strategies. If significant GDP expansion occurs, policymakers will be engaged to determine how to best utilize those gains.
Building on Existing Work
The Economic Futures Program builds upon Anthropic's existing Economic Index, launched in February. This index open-sources aggregated, anonymized data to analyze AI's effects on labor markets and the economy, a contrast to competitors who often keep such data proprietary.
Key Focus Areas for Research and Policy
Anthropic is actively seeking research and policy ideas that go beyond just labor market impacts. They are interested in understanding:
- How workflows are changing with AI.
- The creation of new, unforeseen jobs.
- The evolving value of different skills.
- The effects of AI on fiscal policy and enterprise value creation.
Heck stressed the desire to "open the aperture" on what can be studied, acknowledging that labor is a significant aspect but not the sole focus.
Comparison with OpenAI's Approach
Anthropic's rival, OpenAI, released its Economic Blueprint in January. OpenAI's strategy focuses more on public adoption of AI tools, building AI infrastructure, and establishing "AI economic zones" to streamline regulations and encourage investment. While OpenAI's "Stargate" project aims to create jobs through data center construction, its economic blueprint does not directly address AI-related job loss in the same way Anthropic's program does.
The Broader Trend: Tech Companies Addressing Disruption
Anthropic's initiative reflects a growing trend among tech companies to position themselves as part of the solution to the disruptions they help create. This could stem from reputational concerns, genuine altruism, or a combination of both. For example, ride-hail company Lyft recently launched a forum to gather input from human drivers as it integrates robotaxis into its platform.
